Moody, memorable, breathtaking sunset in Caylus, France.
Today I find myself dreamily thinking back to when I traveled to the Tarn-et-Garonne region of France four years ago.
Some words to describe this little pocket of countryside in southern France: serene. Resplendent. Expansive. Quiet. Relaxing. Magical. Quaint. Unspoiled.
However, this is a photo essay, so I’ll save more words for another time and let you enjoy these pictures. Happy Sunday, all.

So many ancient castles make the French countryside even more magical.
And is any trip to Europe complete without chocolate?

There is an admirable fact about the psychology of France: she knows no half measures, loathsome or sublime, she forges the thought and the beauty of a world or of a dung heap; her destiny is never to be mediocre. ย –Josรฉphin Pรฉladanย
Lovely photos! Isn’t it great how there are random castles sprinkled around the countryside? Apparently, you can rent them out for parties and weddings.
Yes, they’re little historical treasures to stumble on to! Sights like castles are part of the allure of traveling outside the U.S. ๐
Southern France has always been a place I want to visit, but your words describing this place and your pictures make me want to go right *now*!

I hope you get to go eventually! I was lucky to have an English host who’d been living in France for years, and he eager acted as my tour guide. So great!
so, so beautiful! i studied abroad in London when I was in college and I loved taking time off to travel to Europe. i sure miss it. Southern France was especially gorgeous and so tranquil. the best part are the streets. you could just walk around and around and explore and see so much beauty in every corner. plus, there’s usually an awesome baguette place, cheese store or a pastry shop waiting for you to visit. you definitely captured my nostalgia in these pics!
Carmen
Thanks, Carmen! Tranquil is another applicable description for sure. And yes, walking the village streets is enough of an exciting activity for me, too, haha. You never know what you’ll see that’ll make you smile ๐
It’s quite funny that I stumbled across your blog today because you’re dreaming of Southern France, where I’m currently living, and I’m feeling homesick and dreaming about the Hudson Valley, where I grew up ๐

Ha, that is funny, Sara! So glad you found me. I love reading blogs about places I’ve visited or still want to travel to ๐
Wow! This is fabulous and I must go!!! I think I need to have a solo trip to just relax and soak it all in. Beautiful! So glad I found your blog!!
xoxo
Selena
Yes, Selena, I recommend a solo trip, but I’ve traveled by myself tons, so I’m biased. Hope you get to go soon, this regions is *gorgeous*! Thank you for your sweet words and happy we found each other, too!
That looks so gorgeous! What an inspiring trip!
Thanks, Liz!
I love those Kinder surprise eggs! I haven’t had them in ages – not since my friend went to Germany and brought some back.
The photos certainly strike a mood – I find myself wishing to be there, even though I love where I am today and it is beautiful in New England today. It’s just my travel bug.
Yes, me too! I first fell in love with Kinder Surprise in 2005 and thought they were the neatest things ever (oh man, I just used the word neat and wasn’t talking about cleanliness).
It’s funny when we wish to be other places even though we’re perfectly content where we are, isn’t it? Happens to me a lot.
So charming. ๐

Every little architectural detail was so charming, it’s true!
Beautiful photos. I really enjoyed my time in Paris, but it was way too short. One day I hope to re-visit and really explore France as a country.
Thank you, Sarai! My time in Paris was too short, as well- about three days total. I spent ten days in the region pictured above, which was a nice amount of time ๐
Ohh, that winding narrow road between the houses–so beautiful! I remember being in Europe and holding my breath while the buses sped through those roads like it was nothing. ๐ This makes me want to book a trip to France immediately!

I love that winding road, too. The juxtaposition of modern day busses and cars speeding through those old cities and villages is so fascinating!
Gosh, I miss France. Beautiful pictures!
Thanks, Kate. Here’s hoping we both get to return!
I love to live vicariously through your photos. So beautiful. I also love your word choices. Resplendent. Love it!
